临高地处海南岛西北部，东邻澄迈县，西南与儋州市接壤，西北濒临北部湾，北濒琼州海峡，与雷州半岛隔海相望。县政府驻临城镇，距省会海口市83公里。境内海岸线长116公里，主要有金牌、新盈、调楼、美夏、马袅、博铺等12座渔港，可利用浅海滩涂4万多亩，海洋渔业资源极其丰富，海洋捕捞产值和产量连续多年位居全省首位，其中临高县内的新盈中心渔港定位为国家级渔港、调楼武莲渔港为国家一级渔港、特色渔港美夏渔港、马袅湾等。
